Ferrous Metals

In short, all ferrous metals contain iron. Ferrous metals contain properties that make them suitable for certain applications. Some of the most common ferrous metals are Cast Iron, Wrought Iron, Engineering Steel and Structural Steel.

Ferrous Metals are mostly used in the vehicle industry, on bicycles, large buildings, factories and industrial pipework. You will find that most metal you see day to day is ferrous. Bus stops, fencing, handrails and railway tracks are all made from ferrous metals.

One way to test if a metal is ferrous is by using a magnet. If a magnet sticks to it then it is usually ferrous. This type of metal is susceptible to rust when left untreated due to its high carbon content.
